The United States, adopting an interventionist position, threatened Georgia with sanctions in the event of the resumption of direct flights with the Russian Federation On May 10, Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a decree lifting the ban on flights to Georgia and the visa regime for citizens of this country. According to RT, a US State Department statement warned that if Tbilisi resumes direct flights between Georgia and Russia, the country's companies will fall under US sanctions.
 
The statement warned against any contact and expansion of relations with Moscow. A US State Department spokesman also said: "Many Western countries, including the United States, prohibit Russian aircraft from entering their airspace. Now is not the time to deepen relations with Russia. If Georgian airlines resume flights between Georgia and Russia, sanctions will be imposed against them."
 
In 2019, Moscow suspended visa-free travel and direct flights in response to anti-Russian protests in Tbilisi.However, from May 15, Georgian citizens will be able to enter Russian territory without issuing a visa. A visa will still be required to enter Russia for work or study for more than three months.Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili praised Russia's decision to allow a visa-free regime and lift the ban on direct flights between the two countries.Earlier, he stated that Georgia would not join the financial and economic sanctions imposed against Russia.
