About 1,000 people have been left homeless due to floods caused by the heavy rain that continues to fall in the Arusha region of northern Tanzania.

The governor of Arusha, Paul Makonda, has said that the people have been left homeless after their houses were washed away by water or destroyed by floods in the past two weeks.

One part of Makonda's statement said: "The regional authorities are busy in collecting the damage caused by the floods before giving a final assessment." He said this after visiting and inspecting the areas affected by floods in the region.

He has also asked citizens and residents of flood-affected areas to move to higher ground to avoid further damage.

For his part, the Chief Spokesman of the Government of Tanzania who is also the Director of the Department of Information, Mobhare Matinyi said on Sunday that 58 people have lost their lives due to floods in 10 regions of Mainland Tanzania in the past two weeks, including 10 in Arusha Region. .

Matinyi gave police reports that 58 people lost their lives between April 1 and 13 due to the floods that have affected various parts of Tanzania including Rufiji.
