Amnesty International: convictions tripled in Saudi Arabia
RIYADH-In Amnesty International's report on the death penalty in the world, Saudi Arabia is the country that "incredibly" tripled the number of executions from 65 in 2021 to 196 in 2022, the highest number recorded by the humanitarian organization , over the past 30 years. A worrying fact that brings Saudi Arabia to the first place on the podium of serious human rights violations also with regard to torture used in prisons and beyond. One above all the case of the journalist Khashoggi who literally disappeared in the Saudi embassy in Istanbul in 2018 and for which the UN has held Saudi Arabia responsible.
According to the humanitarian organization, "Saudi Arabia executed 81 prisoners in a single day: it happened on March 15 against Saudi nationals and foreigners convicted of a wide range of crimes including terrorism, murder, robbery and drug trafficking. Some of the convicted were found guilty of “damaging the social fabric and national cohesion” and “participating in and inciting participation in sit-ins and protests.” Forty-one of the victims were members of the Shia minority. And that's not all: according to Amnesty's investigation, the states of West Asia and North Africa violate international law, displaying a profound contempt for human life.
