Members of one of New York's most prominent Hasidic Jewish groups have clashed with police over a decision to barricade a secret underground tunnel leading to the movement's main synagogue. The New York Times reports this. As the publication notes, the tunnel was built between the headquarters of the Chabad-Lubavitch group and the synagogue and was first discovered at the end of last year. On Monday, January 8, a cement truck arrived to fill the passage, but New York Jews tried to block the attempt. The police were called to the scene, and a confrontation occurred between members of the group and law enforcement officials. Nine people were arrested. It is clarified that there is no exact information yet about who built the tunnel and why. However, two men familiar with members of the movement said that the motive was to accelerate the expansion of the group, which was called for by the leader of the Lubavitcher movement, Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson. Earlier it became known that the president of Harvard University, Claudine Gay, resigned. She has reportedly been accused of plagiarism and anti-Semitism.
