Human Rights Watch: Rwanda and M23 rebels are attacking DR Congo citizens

The international human rights organization Human Rights Watch has accused the Rwandan army and the rebel group M23 of carrying out attacks against civilians in the eastern part of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC).

A new report issued by the human rights organization said that, throughout the year 2024, the two sides have indiscriminately attacked the camps of civilians who were forced to leave their homes and other densely populated areas near Goma, the capital of Kivu province. North in the DRC.

The United Nations says that the Rwandan army and M23 are fighting side by side in DR Congo, although Kigali denies the accusation.

The Human Rights Watch report has confirmed that it has recorded five attacks since January 2024 until now, where Rwandan and M23 missiles or rockets attacked camps of people who were forced to evacuate their homes or civilian areas.

The human rights organization has also accused the DR Congo army and its allies of having deployed weapons near the camps of people who were forced to leave their homes, which, it says, puts the citizens at risk. Human Rights Watch has called for more effective measures to protect civilians.

The violence and chaos have forced more than half a million people to flee to the camps surrounding the city of Goma.../
