Sudan, thousands of civilians fleeing clashes and millions at risk
Clashes in recent days in the Darfur region of western Sudan have led between 10,000 and 20,000 people to seek refuge in neighboring Chad, according to UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) teams present at the confine. "Most of those arriving are women and children, currently sheltered in the open", underlines a note in which the UNHCR recalls that "Chad already hosts more than 400,000 refugees from Sudan and new arrivals are making strains the services and resources of the country, already in difficulty".
The eruption of violence in Sudan has the potential to plunge millions into hunger. The World Food Program (WFP) has been forced to temporarily suspend operations providing life-saving food and cash assistance in a country where a third of the population struggles to get enough food. A record number of people were already going hungry in Sudan before conflict erupted on 15 April. In 2023, WFP plans to assist more than 7.6 million people.
