The commander of Ukraine's significant military formation in the eastern Donetsk region has been substituted by President Volodymyr Zelensky for the third time in less than a year.
The Khortytsia operational-strategic group, which is responsible for a significant portion of Ukraine's eastern front, will be under the supervision of the new commander, Major General Mykhailo Drapatyi. As Russia continues to advance toward the city of Pokrovsk, this transformation poses a threat to the availability of critical supply routes for Ukrainian forces.
During his nightly video address, Zelensky disclosed that the decision was reached following consultations with Ukraine's Commander-in-Chief, Oleksandr Syrskyi. Zelensky stated, "These are the most challenging combat zones."
He also underscored the significance of Drapatyi's role in enhancing the coordination of military operations and the training of brigades. The president is optimistic that this leadership transition will fortify Ukraine's defenses in the region.
Pokrovsk, a city with a pre-war population of approximately 60,000, has served as an essential defensive position for Ukraine. It is currently at a higher risk of being captured by Russian forces. The ongoing conflicts in the Donetsk region are a component of Russia's overarching strategy to annex the region, a critical objective for President Vladimir Putin in the ongoing conflict.
Drapatyi's appointment follows the reassignment of Major General Andriy Hnatov, who had served as the leader of the Khortytsia group since June. Hnatov will now be appointed as the Deputy Chief of the General Staff, where he will be accountable for the coordination of instruction and communication within the Ukrainian military.
