NATO is preparing to hold its largest exercise in decades
The senior commander-in-chief of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) said that in the coming days the military bloc's largest military exercises in recent decades will take place, involving about 90,000 troops.
According to Reuters, Christopher Cavoli announced that about 90,000 troops will take part in NATO's largest exercise in decades, called Resilient Defender 2024. The exercise begins next week and will continue for more than three months until May. After a two-day meeting of NATO defense ministers, the American general added: "NATO will demonstrate its ability to strengthen the Euro-Atlantic space by moving its forces from North America to the eastern shore of this ocean." Barron's website also quoted Cavoli and wrote: "This months-long exercise is designed to test NATO's ability to engage with enemies like Russia." The exercise also involves military units from 31 NATO members, as well as Swedish armed forces seeking to join NATO. The upcoming NATO exercise, the largest since Reforger in 1988 during the Cold War, comes as the military organization tries to rebuild its defenses in the face of Russia's war against Ukraine. Almost two years have passed since the war between Russia and Ukraine, during which time NATO has sent tens of billions of dollars in weapons and financial aid to Kyiv, but Russia still maintains an advantage on the battlefield.
