The UN Secretary General is 'deeply saddened' by the situation in Sudan
The United Nations expressed its concern on Sunday about the ongoing fighting between the Sudanese Army Forces and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) militia in North Darfur.
Farhan Haq, the spokesperson of the United Nations, said in a statement that Secretary-General Antonio Guterres is deeply saddened by the ongoing situation in El Fasher, North Darfur, where fierce fighting has been reported between Sudanese Army Forces and RSF militants as well as others involved in the struggle. of weapons."
He added that these clashes have serious consequences for civilians. Haq said that the fighting will also increase the humanitarian needs in and around El Fasher at a time when the state of hunger has been confirmed in the Zamzam internal refugee camp in the south of El Fasher and there is a high probability in other areas of people moving in the city.
The spokesman added that: " The Secretary-General calls on all parties to comply with their obligations under international humanitarian law to protect and allow the safe passage of civilians and to facilitate the rapid access of humanitarian aid without obstacles."
Referring to his call for an immediate cessation of hostilities and a permanent ceasefire, Haq said that Guterres has also urged the parties to return to political dialogue as the only way to reach a negotiated solution.
Sudan has suffered a war between the army, led by General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, who is the head of the Transitional Council of Administration, and the RSF group led by his former deputy Mohamed Hamdan Daglo.
According to United Nations statistics, approximately 12,260 people have been killed and more than 33,000 injured in the war that began in April 2023,
The humanitarian crisis continues to worsen as nearly 6.8 million people have fled their homes to seek safety in Sudan or neighboring countries.
Regional and international efforts have so far failed to stop the fighting.
